Ottawa's Stairwell Carollers perform Alleluja" - Henry Purcell - YouTube video

Stittsville United Church stained glass windows
Searching back in The Stairwell Carollers Youtube video vault, I found this wonderful "Alleluja" by Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Purcell was an English composer of the Renaissance. This was my first Alleluja I learned and I now sing it by heart.

This version of "Alleluja" is available on our sacred Renaissance CD, "Cantate Domino”

St. Barnabas' stained glass -- a jewel on Ottawa's James street

St.Barnabas has the typical red brick of many Ottawa buildings
St. Barnabas church on James Street in downtown Ottawa is one of our favourite singing venues. It  has amazing acoustics (we recorded our Cantate Domino CD there) within an art-bedecked interior.

Even the working windows are enhanced with stained glass. The golden glow from these windows flood the church in the afternoon. The contrast in colour to the other windows is striking.

Tonight we sing at Knox Presbyterian -- A cathedral sized gothic style church in downtown Ottawa.

It's a grand space with gorgeous acoustics and plenty of seating, so if you haven't heard us yet, this is almost your last chance this season.

I adore this church, so austere, but somehow warm and welcoming. It wears its Christmas garments like an Edwardian lady would her dinner gown.
Christmas lights from the street are transformed by ancient glass panes

I was still getting over a bout of laryngitis, so I had a chance to capture some of this buildings architectural glory, while listening for directions that may apply to my own performance.

We are so excited about this season! All the songs in our 2014 Christmas Concert repertoire will be recorded on our next Christmas CD this coming January, 2015. Can you guess the title? O Magnum Mysterium, of course!
As with all our Chrismas CDs, this title piece is an original composition, by our director, Pierre and is premiering this season at our concerts.
See you at a concert!
Holly
