Ars Nova Stairwell Caroller concert musings - very late Saturday post

St. Bartholomew church, Ottawa

Thanks to Ars Nova for sponsoring Saturday's wonderful concert at historic St. Bartholomew church. This Stairwell Carollers concert was presented in tandem with the Governor General's church 150 year celebration.
St. Bart's welcomed us with cozy ambience and an appreciative audience

Many of us were a bit nervous before the show started. Some just had the usual first concert anxiety; others were singing their very first concert as a Stairwell Caroller!
Some first-time Stairwellers here

No matter, we sang, we enjoyed ourselves and, best of all, the audience seemed to enjoy our singing too!
Glorious brass eagle overlooks St. Bart's interior

At the reception afterwards, we found out that the audience was packed with choristers!
Uplifting music makes every concert a joy to participate in

I feel validated.

Ecco la nimph Ebrayca chiamata sung by the Stairwell Carollers - YouTube

Lilac flowers decorate our fountain birdbath

I dug way back in our YouTube video vault and found Ecco la nimph Ebrayca chiamata. We uploaded this in 2010, but the concert was June 8th, 2001! We all look so young  :)

I loved this church - St. Charles Catholic church on Barrette Street in Vanier.
A view showing a gorgeous modern stained glass window
St. Charles is no longer in use as a church. Still standing, a sign posted on the grounds say it will be converted to a market.

We recorded this song for our Renaissance Madrigal CD "Audite Nova" - available HERE.

If you love our music, a Donation would be appreciated. Please DONATE to our 40th Year goal of $15,000 to support celebrations for our Ottawa choir milestone.  All donations receive a charitable tax receipt! I hope to see many former Stairwellers at our 40th celebrations - starting this Christmas season.

THIS SEASON’S REPERTOIRE
We've been having such great success with our sacred and secular repertoire from all eras that our director Pierre Massie has decided to continue this new tradition again this Spring.

We will be singing motets, madrigals and more from the Renaissance to present day, including the Missa brevis by Lotti, our most viewed sacred work on our YouTube channel.

New works this season include Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine, Lauridsen's Contre qui Rose, Whitacre's Sleep and many more.
A CARILLON FEATURE CONCERT
On Dec 12, 2016, our Director had the honour and privilege of being the featured artist for the noon hour concert of the PeaceTower carillon.  Andrea McCrady, Canada’s Dominion Carillonneur, played his arrangements of Ça bergers, assemblons nous and Wassail Song, as well as his composition Mourning Dove.  She also premiered The Stairwell Carol and his arrangement of Dans cette étable.

Pierre would like to thank Dr. McCrady for a flawless and brilliant performance of his works.  Many thanks to those carollers who were present at the event.  Video of the Carillonneur performance of The Stairwell Carol can be seen on our YouTube channel.

CHARITY WORK
At our December 16th, 2016 concert, the Stairwell Carollers donated $2000 to the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County.

The Alzheimer’s Society exists to alleviate the personal and social consequences of this disease and other dementias, and to promote research. Patients are treated with dignity, empathy, compassion and respect for their right to make their own decisions.

Stairwell Caroller total donations to charities since 1987: $117,319.

We need your help...

Fall 2017 marks our 40th year.
To commemorate our milestone, we have many ideas for events, workshops and activities. We need $15,000 to make it happen.

Please consider making a contribution.  There are several levels of donations available and some of those come with perks.
